Online reputation management is, in its simplest form, managing and understanding what is being said about you online. But just why is it so important in the modern age? Let’s first consider the sheet volume of blogs and forums online. There are more than 150 million blogs globally and this is a number that is growing quickly. The estimations indicate that 1 new blog is created every single second. What does this mean for businesses? Well, blogs and forums are basically a free-for-all in terms of what can be said. Put bluntly, it means that anybody can write absolutely anything on any topic and make it visible to a potentially massive global audience. So if you have dissatisfied customers of disgruntled former members of staff, they could write negative material about you and that may damage your reputation Then consider how much we all love search engines and there is a real potential problem. Search engines are amazing. We can find information on almost any topic almost instantly thanks to Google and its competitor. This in turn means that anyone can find information quickly. Potential customers considering using your company are likely to research you online by running a search for your company name in Google or another search engine. When they do this, hopefully the first result will be your own company website. But what are the rest of the results? The default number of results is ten per page. What to the other 9 say about you? There is a real possibility that they could be both positive and negative forum conversions or blog posts about your brand. Online reputation management is designed to help you to understand this sort of information, respond to any negative information out there in the best way possible and to establish a positive reputation online. In the computer age, where consumers really do have a massive choice in pretty much every area, they’re likely to be more selective. This leads to them doing more research about potential businesses they may buy from, which is why no modern day company should ignore their online reputation. Online reputation management is essentially, making sure that any negative information that is put on the Internet about you, is pushed to the bottom of a big pile of positive, complementary information so that no-one finds the bad stuff. This practise is being used more and more not only by the rich and famous, but by the not so rich and the not so famous. It is increasingly normal these days to “Google” a new partner, business associate, colleague etc and as such if you are not careful you can soon find your reputation tainted through no fault of your own. In these technically minded times, the Internet is always bubbling with information and the sudden popularity of things like facebook and my space means it’s simpler for a ticked off customer, journalist, even lover to damage your reputation should they so wish. This is where the top SEO companies such as ourselves come in. We can in some cases remove some of the unflattering material (although this is very difficult to do) and then we bombard your name with more suitable content, blogs, websites articles etc and then promote them into the top listings. What this effectively achieves is that as the SEO magic is worked on the positive content and it moves up the search engine rankings, it will push the unwanted material down to where far fewer people are ever likely to find it. If you search “Kate Moss” in Google you will see that she has recently had this technique employed on her name as the first results page is filled with complementary information about her and you will have to dig a bit deeper to find anything that doesn’t sing her praises, whereas if the results were sorted completely naturally, the events from recent news stories would be at the top. Much the same as it does in the rest of the world, bad news travels faster and further on Google than good news, it is therefore crucial that you have some positive content about yourself out there either when this does happen, or before it happens as a method of prevention.
