META Keywords Still Work: While until recently there was still some debate on this, it’s now officially one of the SEO myths. Both Google and Yahoo! have publicly announced that they do not use META keywords for their ranking algorithms. In other words, you should no longer pay any attention to them or devote any time to including them. META descriptions and tiles however are still valuable. 4. Web Directories are Highly Valuable: It’s been a very long time since web directories have been highly valuable. The proliferation of the insta-web directory and webmasters submitting their sites to them en masse has devalued the importance of these once powerful marketing strategies. Getting displayed in highly credible web directories can still be advantageous, but in general web directories have lost their mystique. #5- Blackhat SEO Won’t Get you Caught- It’s still amazing today that people believe they won’t be caught doing something that is illegal. What it comes down to though is no matter how big or small your company is, using illicit marketing tacts can keep you from being listed in the major search engines. #6- SEO Success Happens Overnight- Even though we consider this one of the major SEO myths, most people are beginning to catch on to the longevity involved. The truth is SEO is an endless battle and mostly because of the fluctuation that takes place in the algorithms. If you or someone you know think this is a quick fix solution, you’ll end up being disappointed. 7. Google is All That Matters: Obviously Google is the largest and most powerful search engine that’s out there today. However, one of the most prevalent SEO myths is that it’s all the matters for the success of your website. This can’t be farther from the truth. A prime example of this is through keyword selection. There are hundreds of different ways to find keywords and in order to find them you need to do research. If you don’t you can easily end up losing out in the long run. 10. More Traffic is Always Better: Receiving a lot of traffic is generally great, but if all of your traffic is untargeted you won’t be producing any results. Additionally, sites with high bounce rates can end up suffering in the search engines as a result because your site is viewed as having something wrong with it or being a match. Therefore, first strive for highly targeted traffic and then work to increase and expand your base. 11. Buying Links and Link Farms Always Works: Google has long since sniffed out the practices of link farming, three way linking and buying links. You may be able to derive some benefits in certain situations, however in most cases many of these techniques fall into the blackhat realm and can see you penalized. #12- Once you Achieve a Ranking, You’re Done- SEO myths are all over the place and they usually start with thinking you’re done when you finally get that ranking. However, you will find that SEO is an ongoing process that takes constant work. So if you just wrote 10 articles, submitted them to directories and added a few backlinks here and there, it’s only the beginning. After writing a book about SEO and even publishing my own SEO products and services, I still seem to get the same question over and over again. That question is simply what the secret is to top search engine rankings. Other than applying SEO best practices, there are really only a couple of SEO techniques that stand above all else. My reason for believing that some techniques are really best kept secrets is because they are not talked about in SEO forums or within even some of the top SEO products. You might ask yourself why these aren’t discussed. The answer is simple. Some secrets, if shared may dilute the effectiveness of the technique. For those of you who have been thinking about SEO, you are probably looking for the fastest and quickest way to put your website in the number one position on Google and other major search engines. The result of getting the much coveted number one position is traffic, higher ad revenue, and greater sales. As someone making a living online, I can promise you that having the top ranking for competitive keywords is all it is cracked up to be. The difference between a number one ranking and number 4 ranking is the difference between making a living online and making next to nothing. Okay, so what are some of these “secrets”? I would be happy to share one at no charge. Let me begin by saying that not every secret is complex or all that unique. Often times, secrets are simply techniques that applies in a unique way, create a significant difference. That is how I view these SEO secrets simply because they probably wont move mountains but can have a dramatic impact on your search engine rankings whether you have a website, blog, or squeeze page that you want to promote. Here is the secret you have been waiting for. Simply put, if you want to achieve top rankings for any keyword you just have to follow the same strategy used by the top ranked website for that keyword or keyword phrase. This strategy is incredibly simple but not used by at least 98% of people doing business online. To duplicate the success of your number one competitor discover the techniques he is using to achieve the top position on search engine results. Start taking advantage of this by analyzing the links into your competitor’s website. This can be done using Alexa or Google. When links are made to your competitors site, this is referred to as back links. These in-bound links often contain text inclusive of the keywords you are optimization for. Attempt to get links from the same sites with your keywor phrase included. This will help you to quickly match your competitors linking strategy. The obvious challenge here is not only finding who is linking to your competitor, but to actually build links from the same web pages. This if often easier said than done. The good news is that there are a number of software programs that can help you do this. I’ve personally used a number of them and can tell you that they work. By duplicating this technique, learning which sites are linking into your competitor, you can significantly enhance your website ranking. This can be done for one keyword or many. This takes a good deal of work so begin researching the inbound links to your competitor and start your link building campaign using the sites they use. Your SEO results with improve quickly.
